While visiting a bird sanctuary, a TikTok user got a surprise when she happened upon a nesting pelican with two hatchlings. The first surprise was the noise level. Then the visitor noted the nest was in a tree. Most commenters stated that they would have expected the large birds to nest in rocky areas or on beaches away from animals. Except for one, they are primarily white. The odd one is brown with a gray head and a reddish-brown neck. The main characteristic of pelicans is their large beak and bill pouch. Contrary to popular belief, the birds eat their catch immediately and do not carry it in the throat pouch. The pelican is an expert fisher. They fly above the surface of the water, filling their bill pouch with water and fish. They drain off the water and maneuver the fish to swallow it head first. The white baby pelicans don’t stay in the muppet phase long. They all seem to go through a period where they resemble tiny little pterodactyls before their feathers start to come in. When they first hatch, the babies are entirely dependent on the mother. They remain in the nest about a month before they are big enough to venture out. As they grow, the video shows how the mother teaches them to survive. She gives them swimming and fishing lessons. Once they fledge, she begins teaching them to fish in flight.
