The birds have a slender body, with a tiny head perched on a long neck. They have long legs and will frequently stand on one leg while resting. Their pink wings have black flight feathers along the wing edges. Adults stand around five feet tall, but they only weigh four to eight pounds. They live in shallow wetland areas and prefer brackish or salt water. Although they mate for life, their mating ritual involves the entire flock. With everyone in the mood, mating and egg-laying progress rapidly. The downward curve of their beak helps them as they poke along the water’s edge searching for bugs and small fish. Their primary diet consists of seeds, brine, fly larvae, small mollusks, and shrimp. They normally wade through the shallows, stirring up the bottom with their feet.
