Republican Governor Expected To Call Special Session To Redraw Congressional Maps, Could Add One Extra GOP House Seat
Missouri Gov. Mike Kehoe is expected to call lawmakers into a special session to redraw the state’s congressional maps.
The special session could occur as early as next week.
“When we’re ready to make that announcement, we’ll get it out there,” Kehoe said, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
“There’s a lot of moving puzzle pieces. We’re still making sure what’s going to work is going to work,” he added.

More from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:
Missouri has eight U.S. House seats, two held by Democrats. The task at hand for Republicans is to change the partisan make-up of the Kansas City-focused 5th district, resulting in one additional GOP vote in the House for Trump’s policies.
Similar efforts to stack the partisan deck are underway in red and blue states in an unprecedented mid-decade redistricting push for power spurred by the White House.
Republicans in Texas are trying to flip five seats. Indiana also is attempting to find one more GOP district.
Democrats in California are hoping to neutralize any Republican gains by drawing new districts favoring their party. Illinois, Missouri’s Democrat-controlled neighbor, appears unlikely to join the fray.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Wesley Bell’s St. Louis-area 1st district is unlikely to be radically affected if the GOP has its way, but voters in the St Louis suburbs likely will face changes to account for the dilution of Democratic votes in the western part of the state.

KSHB 41 Kansas City provided further info:
Democratic leaders from the Missouri House of Representatives expect Governor Mike Kehoe to call them back to Jefferson City next week, formally asking them to change the state’s congressional district boundaries.
Redistricting has been a national debate this summer, with attention focused in Texas and California. Talks about redistricting in Missouri began at the beginning of the month. President Donald Trump appeared to weigh in last week.
Six of the state’s eight U.S. Representatives are Republicans.
In a statement Monday, Missouri House Minority Leader Ashley Aune, a representative from Kansas City’s Northland, wrote in part, “House Democrats believe congressional redistricting is a once-per-decade task that has already been completed in accordance with the state constitution. But if Republicans insist on giving Democrats the opportunity to win more congressional seats by weakening safe GOP districts in their quest for a mythical 7-1 map, then so be it.”
