Absolutely Adorable: “Telling My Students I’m Moving To 2nd Grade With Them”

The end of every school year usually comes with daily announcements about everything for the summer. First-grade teacher Tina de Leon had some good news and some bad news for her students. Beginning with the bad news, she informed them she would not be there next year teaching first grade. Then she turned their frowns upside-down with the good news that she was moving to second grade with them. Kids are predictable, and half the class burst into tears with the news. After verifying that they were “happy tears,” the kids crowded around their beloved teacher for a group hug. Students in that age range often form a strong bond with their teacher. They’ve just spent approximately 180 days with them, laughing, learning, and growing as little humans. Seeing the tears flowing freely in the boys and girls brings out a smile even for the curmudgeons. For the teacher, moving from first to second grade with her students is a special bonus. She doesn’t have to learn all the students’ names. She might have a few new students, but she’ll find it easy to learn them. The students are already familiar with classroom routines. Although things will change from grade to grade, many routines will remain the same. Being familiar with the names, personalities, and abilities of her students, Miss de Leon can jump right into the curriculum. A typical school year begins with a week of “getting to know your students” time. Moving to second grade means that step can be skipped. Miss de Leon may have another surprise for her new second graders. There was a bachelorette party over the summer, and the teacher was the guest of honor. We’re awaiting wedding pictures.
