Germany’s Neuschwanstein Castle Looks Like It Belongs In A Fairy Tale
Neuschwanstein Castle is said to have been the inspiration for Disneyland’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. The original design and construction began under King Ludwig II (1845-1886) of Bavaria. Coincidentally, King Ludwig II was known as the “Fairytale King.”
Construction design began in 1868, but was not complete until 1886. They placed the foundation stone on September 5, 1869. The first part of the construction was the Gateway Building. Ludwig II lived in the Gateway Building for many years before officially moving into the still-incomplete castle in 1884.
@stasi.belle This castle has always reminded me of my favorite childhood cartoon — Beauty and the Beast. There’s something so magical about its silhouette, like it stepped right out of a fairytale… But no, it’s not Disney — it’s the real-life Neuschwanstein Castle, nestled in the Bavarian mountains and said to be the inspiration for the Disney castle itself. Standing here, you almost expect the music to start and Belle to appear in her golden dress… #neuschwanstein #germanycastle #beautyandthebeast #disneyinspired #travel ♬ оригінальний звук – stasi.belle
Although it presents an amazing facade against the Bavarian mountains, construction was still underway until 1886, the same year the King died. The interior walls depict scenes from medieval adventure and the operas of composer Richard Wagner, with large and intricate frescoes.
During the lengthy construction, King Ludwig II began to withdraw from public appearances. As he retreated, he also made changes to the construction plans. The exterior may appear medieval, but the interior included all the best technology of the century. Toilets on every floor had automatic flushing systems. The entire castle had an air heating system. Water comes from a nearby spring that sits around 200 meters (approximately 656 feet) above the castle.

Hidden doors are one of the unique design features of Neuschwanstein Castle. These hidden entrances blend into the walls, ceilings, and floors. They allow discreet access to various rooms within the castle.
The location of Neuschwanstein Castle, overlooking the Hohenschwangau valley in the Bavarian Alps, lends to its fairytale reputation. Guided group tours of Neuschwanstein Castle cannot exceed 15 visitors per group. The castle tour takes about 30 minutes. There are elevators and other provisions available to assist mobility-impaired guests.
