Counting Crows found their voice in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1991 when vocalist and lyricist Adam Duritz paired up with guitarist David Bryson. They started as an acoustic duo, playing gigs around Berkeley and San Francisco while fleshing out musical ideas in demo form. By the time they signed to Geffen Records early in 1992 after a bidding war, the band had expanded to include bassist Matt Malley, keyboardist Charlie Gillingham, and drummer Steve Bowman. That combination formed the core for their explosive debut.
