When you are hiking on a mountain with your dog, the last thing on your mind is what to do if your dog suffers an injury. We often play rescue scenarios in our minds. Unfortunately, they all involve our hero dog running three miles to the ranger station. The pair were out with a group of friends when Keeks’ dog hurt his paw. The group was able to bandage the injured paw, but the dog would have struggled to walk. They fashioned a backpack-style rescue sling out of shirts, allowing one of them to carry the dog on their back. The idea was genius. The mountainous terrain would have made it almost impossible for Keeks to get her dog to safety if she had been hiking alone. She could have fashioned a rescue skid and dragged it out, but carrying a dog weighing about 40 to 45 pounds is not an easy task. The make-shift rescue sling allowed her friend to carry her dog almost effortlessly on his back. Keeks’ dog seemed to enjoy the ride, looking around over the man’s shoulders at the passing scenery. The caption under the video assures followers that “He’s okay!!!!!!” Commenters pointed Keeks to rescue slings for future trips. Upon reviewing many of the available slings, most proved adequate for ten-pound dogs. The larger slings did not look comfortable for the animal or the carrier. Instead of these, Keeks might want to check out some of the wrap-around slings for carrying toddlers. We’re glad her dog is okay. Please share.
