First Vinyl Nirvana Record Played On The Radio Up For Auction
The first vinyl test pressing of a Nirvana song ever played by a radio station is currently on the auction block drawing bids for several thousand dollars.
A 7-inch pressing of “Love Buzz,” a song originally recorded by Shocking Blue in the late ’60s, is currently up for bids through Goldin, an international online auction house.
Love Buzz
The 7-inch vinyl record comes with a certificate of authenticity from Scott Vanderpool, who was a volunteer at KCMU, a Seattle non-commercial radio station known for promoting the regional music scene.
Vanderpool was also a Sub Pop employee and was able to get his hands on test pressings just as they arrived. Both Vanderpool and Sub Pop co-founder Jon Poneman were KCMU volunteer DJs,” recalled Vanderpool in his certificate of authenticity. “It (the “Love Buzz” test pressing) was handed to me by Jon seconds after it arrived in the mail from the pressing plant… I immediately took it to the radio station to play (on the air).
The test pressing of “Love Buzz” has the distinction of being the first Nirvana studio recording played on the radio anywhere and was also the first single ever offered as part of the Sub Pop Singles Club with only 1,000 numbered copies issued.
Goldin’s ‘s Fall Music Auction runs through November 12th and features more than 600 lots of rare instruments, vinyl records, stage-used accessories and original artist photographs.
