Trade War Peace Talks in China

The stakes are high for President Trump’s meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. The two met for photos on Wednesday but will meet again Thursday morning to discuss the trade war. The two presidents smiled and looked friendly for the cameras but the upcoming meeting is serious. The two leaders have locked horns over tariffs, export restrictions and rare-earth supply chains. China has curbed rare-earth exports, the U.S. continues to threaten sweeping tariffs, and global economies hang in the balance. President Trump has promised a “fantastic deal” to placate U.S. farmers, industries and voters. President Xi, meanwhile, wants to protect China’s strategic autonomy and avoid undermining its domestic industries. U.S. diplomats have hinted that a trade deal has already been agreed to but the details will be hammered out in this meeting. Hopefully.
