The Rise of the Poorigin Story

Here’s a funny new term you might want to know: Poorigin Story. A poorigin story is a mock term for when a politician fabricates humble beginnings to sound more relatable. It’s mostly a Democrat thing. Kamala Harris played up her connection to Black America with an accent not native to the East Bay Indian community where she was raised. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez brags about being from the Bronx, but her classmates pointed out she grew up in the affluent suburb of Westchester County. The newest offender is Gavin Newsom. In portraying himself as a latchkey kid who lived off Wonder Bread, he somehow forgot to mention that his father was a judge and attorney, that his family was financed by Getty Oil, and that he was once featured in the San Francisco Chronicle’s “Children of the Rich” profile. Sure, everyone exaggerates their childhood a bit. Most people do this for the benefit of their children. The whole “when I was your age” bit. When a politician does it, it’s not to inspire you to be better. It’s to convince you they were once like you so you won’t notice how much they are not. It’s basically poverty blackface.
