WATCH: A Young Koe Wetzel Cover Jason Aldean’s “The Truth” In 2010

That East Texas twang hits different. Maybe we can hope that we get a cover of this tune on his promised classic country record. Koe Wetzel has been leaning heavily into his Texas rocker sound with his recent releases “Werewolf” and “Surrounded.” Wetzel is definitely building off the sound he established on his last LP, 9 Lives, which rips, but fans are still hoping that we get his promised traditional country record one of these days. Earlier this year, we asked Koe about that promise he made to make a traditional country music record when he turned 30. Like many of his faithful followers, we haven’t forgotten about that social media post that promised the traditional country project. Wetzel hasn’t either, but he thinks he might let the traditional country record come to him rather than force it just because he drunkenly posted about it one time: “I think I was really drunk when I posted that to Twitter. Not like me to be drunk posting on Twitter, but yeah, I don’t know. I really, truly want to make a traditional country record. But I feel like when I’m ready for that time, it’s gonna come. And I don’t want to force it. You’ve got so many badass traditional country artists right now. You’ve got Zach Top. Post Malone has made some great stuff. You’ve got all these people that are making great traditional country music. I’m gonna let them handle it right now and then maybe I’ll come in later on.” @whiskeyriff @Koe Wetzel’s still planning on releasing a traditional country record one day. // Listen to the latest episode of Whiskey Riff Raff on Spotify, YouTube, or Apple Podcasts. #whiskeyriff #whiskeyriffraff #koewetzel #traditionalcountrymusic ♬ original sound – Whiskey Riff While we can still hold out hope that that day is coming sooner rather than later, it appears that Wetzel is focused on his new music at this time, disclosing that he has not one but TWO records in the works. And based on the singles we have gotten thus far, it sounds like these next projects will seamlessly grow off the sound and tone established on 9 Lives, which was a massive hit among fans and led Koe Wetzel to earn his first number one single with “High Road.” However, when that day comes, Wetzel wants to revisit his traditional country roots; many of his fans hope he covers one song… Jason Aldean’s “The Truth.” This is not the only classic country tune from the 2010s by Wetzel that is worth watching. There’s the awesome video of him covering Randy Rogers Band’s “Steal You Away” at a regional FFA competition in 2011, but I always go back to his cover of “The Truth.” Sitting by a pool table with his buddies in what I’m assuming is someone’s basement, Koe put down a killer of Aldean’s 2010 hit (remember when he put out good music? Those were the days). “The Truth” was written by the late Brett James along with Ashley Monroe, and was originally recorded by Trent Willmon for his 2008 album Broken In before being released by Aldean on his 2009 album Wide Open. It became Aldean’s fourth #1 song in February 2010, spending two weeks at the top of the charts and finishing the year as the #32 country song of 2010. The song has had a resurgence since Brett James tragically passed with his wife and stepdaughter in a plane crash earlier this fall, and it has also had a revival on TikTok, making Koe’s rendition a fitting one to revisit at this time. The vocals are very different from the gritty tone we know from Wetzel today, but the silky smooth twangs he lays down fit his voice so well. Wetzel delivers the lyrics effortlessly, and even in a room with subpar acoustics and folks chatting in the background, he still sounds great. Things we love: This.
