Colter Wall Is Waiting For The Other Shoe To Drop With New Divorce Ballad, “The Longer You Hold On”

Another incredible preview of what’s to come in November for the full-length LP. Colter Wall has done it again, gifting fans with a third single release, “The Longer You Hold On,” which will appear on his forthcoming record, Memories and Empties, out November 14th via La Honda Records and RCA Records. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Colter Wall (@colterwall) Earlier this month, fans got a tenderhearted ode to marriage from the Canadian, “Back to Me.” Wall explained that the song, a love song at its core, detailing the highs and lows of life and the comfort of having someone to do it with. Told from the perspective of an aging rancher, the song is a testament to one of life’s divine gifts… marriage. “Living takes a toll. ‘Back to Me’ is about that, but mostly it’s about loving someone through it all.” Now, we see the other side of “Back to Me” with “The Longer You Hold On,” which highlights the ending of a marriage and the feeling of love fading through a divorce. “‘The Longer You Hold On’ is about waiting for the other shoe to drop. Just the old country theme of nearing the end of a fading love and knowing it.” Sonically, the tune follows the traditional western balladry we know and love from the musician and cowpoke. The sound is tight and to the point, partly because Wall cut the tune with a stellar studio ensemble—mostly made up of his longtime road band, The Scary Prairie Boys—the man takes the stage every night. The twangy opening guitar lick is immediately followed by a subtle harmonica riff, diving right into the tune’s material. Wall cries the lyrics of a narrator feeling unseen. The narrator knows that the end of their vows to each other is approaching, and, to quote Wall, is “waiting for the other shoe to drop.” “Further in despair Did you ever really care Was the thread that I’ve been hanging by Ever really there I can tell you’re just trying to choose your moment The longer you hold on the further down I’ll fall.” I am so here for this divorce ballad from Wall, and we think you will be too. Turn this one all the way up. Colter Wall Talks ‘Memories And Empties’ As we are in the final stretch before we are gifted with Memories and Empties, Colter Wall shared a bit more about what fans can expect from the project. In typical Colter Wall fashion, he didn’t provide much information about the album in the Instagram post. That being said, he revealed to Dale Brisby in a rare media appearance on the Rodeo Time podcast that he wanted to make a “love letter” to country music that sounded like an old Merle Haggard record: “It’s just a love letter to country music. Really, it’s just a bunch of sad drinking songs, mostly. I just wanted to make a record that sounded like Merle Haggard and the Strangers—late 60s into the early 70s. Honestly, to me, that’s where country music peaked. That’s my favorite stuff to listen to, and I think that was the best band in country music. I wanted to make a record that reminded me of that. So that’s what we did… or tried to (do) anyways.” Following up on that statement made on Rodeo Time, Wall recently shared in a press release that fans can expect more of an anthemic country sound on this LP than the western prairie sound we are accustomed to. “There’s some cowboy vernacular and western-isms that crept their way into a few of these songs, but mostly, I was pointed towards more country themes. And the sound is representative of that.” While Wall draws inspiration from folks like Merle Haggard, his sound is not too far from the established tone that fans love, and “1800 Miles,” “Back to Me,” and now “The Longer You Hold On” prove it. November 14th can’t get here soon enough.
