NOT SO FAST: California Gov. Gavin Newsom SUED Over New Gerrymandered Congressional Map

Last night, California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s gerrymandering scheme –Proposition 50 — passed in the polls. However, he shouldn’t celebrate just yet… A California law firm has just sued Gavin Newsom over the unconstitutional new congressional map, which could give Democrats five more House seats. Here are the details: JUST IN: Republicans in California have SUED GAVIN NEWSOM to block his Democrat gerrymandered Congressional map before the 2026 midterms. FIGHT IT! “Argues that the new maps are unconstitutional because they improperly use voters’ race as a factor in drawing districts and asks the court to block them from taking effect,” per NYT A California law firm founded by Assistant AG Harmheet Dhillo filed the suit. One of the attorneys who filed the suit addressed Newsom on X: Dear Gavin Newsom, I hate to rain on your parade but your celebration over the passage of Prop 50 will need to wait a few days. You have been sued. Your unconstitutional racial gerrymandering is now heading to a federal three-judge panel and maybe to the SCOTUS to determining if your use of race in drawing congressional districts should be enjoined. We are asking the court to require the old maps to be in effect while we litigation your unconstitutional actions. Specifically, the lawsuit alleges that Democrats unlawfully used race as the main factor to favor Latinos when drawing the lines of the new congressional map. The New York Post has more: The complaint, filed in U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, seeks to invalidate Proposition 50, which voters approved on Tuesday to implement legislature-drawn maps for the 2026, 2028 and 2030 elections. The lawsuit names both officials in their official capacities as defendants responsible for implementing the challenged maps. “We haven’t reviewed the lawsuit, but if it’s from the California Republican Party and Harmeet Dhillon’s law firm, it’s going to fail. Good luck, losers.” a spokesperson from Newsom’s office said. Plaintiffs, including 19 residents, argue the redistricting violates the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause and the 15th Amendment’s protections against racial discrimination in voting. “The California Legislature violated the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the Constitution when it drew new congressional district lines based on race, specifically to favor Hispanic voters, without cause or evidence to justify it,” the complaint states. The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys from Dhillon Law Group, a San Francisco-based firm founded by prominent Republican attorney Harmeet K. Dhillon. She currently serves as U.S. assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division. Now, keep in mind that while they are absolutely right to sue Newsom over this, the lawsuit will be overseen by left-wing California judges. That means we can expect a lot of delays. It’s unclear whether there will be a temporary restraining order blocking the new congressional map from going into effect while litigation continues. However, this also appears to be just the beginning of Newsom’s troubles… Yesterday evening, President Trump accused California of rigging the election and said that the redistricting measure process is already under legal review!
