Allen Sweppenneiser’s father, Harry, became gravely ill and unable to attend his wedding. Harry was a patient at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia, battling an infection. To stop the spread, doctors amputated Harry’s legs. This made it impossible for him to leave the hospital, so the staff brought the wedding to Harry. “Just seeing him and his reaction, it was everything. And, you know, I wish he was there in person, but it was better that everyone teamed up to make this happen,” Allen told 6 ABC. Julie Seman, Nurse Manager at Penn Presbyterian, helped to make Allen Sweppenneiser’s dream come true. She helped arrange a team to bring the wedding to Harry. The Team At Penn Presbyterian Medical Center Created The Perfect Wedding For The Sweppenneiser Family Julie Seman told 6 ABC they originally wanted to livestream, but that proved very challenging. So the staff pivoted. “We had one of our nurses give him a shave and a haircut the day before; We had one of the nurses make a boutonniere; We had got an outfit down for him to wear,” Julie Seman said. Allen Sweppenneiser said he and his wife were going to be in the area, so it just made sense to see his dad. “For our honeymoon, we were going down to New Jersey. We have to pass Philly on the way to get there, and we were just like, well, why don’t we just stop and see him,” said Allen. It was an emotional moment that meant everything to the Sweppenneiser family. Harry died a short time later, but not before being a part of a huge milestone for his son. “There’s nothing like it. It’s why you go into healthcare. It’s why you help people,” Julie Seman said. Harry Sweppenneiser passed away shortly after the celebration.
