A simply beautiful moment. Randy Travis’ journey over the past twelve years has been nothing short of incredible. If you recall, the “Three Wooden Crosses” singer suffered a massive stroke back in July 2013, which was caused by a complication of his congestive heart failure. At the time, doctors only gave him a 1% chance to live, but Travis pulled through. The stroke, as we all know, did not come without its consequences, however. Despite surviving in what can only be described as a miracle, Travis has remained severely affected by it, developing aphasia and being extremely limited in terms of both speech and his ability to sing. In fact, Travis’ wife, Mary, recently revealed that the doctors advised her to “pull the plug” on the 7x Grammy winner after he developed a plethora of different hospital-born viruses, including Serratia, Pseudomonas and a staph infection while in the hospital. Thankfully, the living legend has been seemingly making more appearances than ever over the past few years. Beyond releasing two new songs, “Where That Came From” and “Horses In Heaven,”  with the help of AI (which has opened up an entirely new can of worms around the music industry recently) and guest vocalist, James Dupré, over the past 18 months, Travis has recently been touring extensively around the U.S. along with his original backing band and Dupré once again serving as a guest vocalist for all of his hits. Recently, the “I Told You So” singer made an appearance at the Grand Ole Opry during their special Veterans’ Day show. On a night filled with performances from the likes of Vince Gill, Emmylou Harris, Jamey Johnson, Craig Morgan, the legendary James Taylor in his Opry debut and more, it was actually the moment shared between Travis and Johnson off the stage that proved to be the most touching. In a video shared to all of Johnson’s social media pages, he uploaded the moment he helped Travis play his guitar, strumming it while Travis formed the chords in his wheelchair. The “In Color” singer would tell Travis that he intentionally uses thicker guitar strings to make playing other guitars easier, thanks to the calluses that heavier strings develop: “I wanted to be able to play anybody else’s guitar regardless of what kind of strings they had. And the only way I could do that is with the medium gauges on these [which] would build up the world’s greatest calluses.” The two would then share what can only be described as a touching moment as Johnson softly strummed the guitar strings as Travis flawlessly formed the chords on the neck of the guitar, beaming with joy and laughing the entire time. After Travis continued to form a few chords with the help of Johnson picking with his right hand, the two would embrace in a hug. Ultimately, it’s moments like these that truly define country music as a whole. While we live in an era that’s become increasingly hyper-focused on the latest disagreement, call-out or “beef” between artists recently, it’s incredibly refreshing to see a down-to-earth moment between two legends. It should go without saying that it’s been tough for many to see Travis in the state he’s been in over the past decade, but seeing him beam with joy while Johnson helps him play guitar should make even the most cynical flash a smile (or shed a tear).
