Tennessee Holds Special Congressional Election, President Trump Issues Statement

Voters in Tennessee’s 7th congressional district will cast their ballots on Tuesday in a special election between Republican U.S. Army combat veteran Matt Van Epps and Democrat state Rep. Aftyn Behn. The candidates are seeking to replace Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), who retired earlier this year. “I am asking all America First Patriots in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District to please GET OUT AND VOTE for a phenomenal Candidate and MAGA Warrior, Matt Van Epps! You can win this Election for Matt, who has my Complete and Total Endorsement. HE WILL BE A GREAT CONGRESSMAN and, unlike his Opponent, he cherishes Christianity and Country Music — She has openly stated that she hates them both!” President Trump said. “TN-07: Polls close at 7:00 P.M. IF YOU ARE IN LINE BY 7 P.M., STAY IN LINE, AND THEY MUST LET YOU VOTE. GET OUT AND VOTE, VOTE, VOTE FOR MATT VAN EPPS — HE WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!” he added. I am asking all America First Patriots in Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District to please GET OUT AND VOTE TOMORROW for a phenomenal Candidate, Matt Van Epps, on Election Day, Tuesday, December 2nd! Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 2, 2025 The Tennessean has more: Voters see the race as a referendum on the Trump agenda, and both sides see the contest as a bellwether for the 2026 midterms. Outside groups on both sides have poured millions into the race. High-level surrogates from both parties have worked to get out the vote, including President Donald Trump, former vice presidents Kamala Harris and Al Gore, and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Both RNC Chair Joe Gruters and DNC Chair Ken Martin have visited the district to turn out votes. A victory for Van Epps could help shore up a razor-thin Republican House majority and break a building wave of Democrat victories ahead of the midterms. Victory for Behn — unthinkable a few weeks ago in the district Trump won by 22 points last year but now within the margin of error — would flip the deep-red seat for the first time in more than four decades, signal success of Democrats’ new strategy in the South and put an exclamation point on the blue surge. “Tennessee, listen up. Tomorrow is the special congressional election for district 7, so get out and vote for @MattForTN , his opponent is total lunatic who supports ‘police abolition’ and every other woke word salad you can imagine,” Donald Trump Jr. said. “Vote for Matt Van Epps!!!” he added. Reflecting the Republican concerns about a district Green won last year by nearly 22 points, President Donald Trump called into events for Van Epps on Monday and House Speaker Mike Johnson visited Tennessee to campaign with him. “The problem is, when you have a deep-red district, a lot of the people take for granted that the Republican or the conservative is going to win,” Johnson said in a joint interview with Van Epps on Fox News Monday afternoon. Democrats have beaten their 2024 margins in US House special elections this year by an average of 16 points. A Democratic victory on Tuesday or even outperforming last year’s results would further embolden Trump’s opponents heading into the midterms. “Having had the privilege of representing Tennessee in years past, I want to tell you that I have never seen the political tides shift as far and as fast as we’re seeing them move in this election,” said Al Gore, who represented the state in the US Senate before becoming vice president, at a virtual rally Monday night for Behn. At a campaign event earlier Monday, Johnson held a mic to his phone so the president could be heard exhorting the crowd to vote on Tuesday. Watch additional coverage below:
