Arthur William “Big Boy” Crudup, born August 24, 1905, in Union Grove, Mississippi, was a pivotal figure in American Delta blues, renowned as a singer-songwriter and guitarist. Growing up in a family of traveling farmworkers, Crudup returned to Mississippi in the mid-1920s, where he initially performed gospel music. Under the mentorship of local blues musician Papa Harvey, Crudup mastered guitar and began performing regularly in local venues. Crudup’s journey took him to Chicago around 1940, where he struggled initially, performing on the streets.
