Robby Krieger explains why The Doors continued after Morrison’s death

Formed by Jim Morrison (Vocals), John Densmore (Drums), Ray Manzarek (Keyboards) and Robby Krieger (Guitar), The Doors was active from 1965 to 1973. But in 1970 the band lost their main lyricist and vocalist Jim Morrison, who passed away in Paris, France at the age of 27. Although they lost a fundamental part of the group, the trio continued as The Doors and recorded two more albums without him. The first one was "Other Voices" (1971) and the second "Full Circle" (1972), both with Manzarek and Krieger recording the vocals. The guitarist recalled in an interview with Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan why they decided to continue even after Jim's death. Robby Krieger explains why The Doors continued after Jim Morrison's death "Well, when we heard that he was gone, we didn't believe it. For one thing, because there was always rumors about, you know, 'Paul is dead,' and blah, blah, blah. So we sent our manager, Bill Siddons, over to France, to Paris, to check it out. And, unfortunately, he never saw the body. So, we were still thinking, 'Maybe he really is just trying to fool everybody. But after a while, it sunk in." "So, what happened is, when Jim had gone to Paris, we had continued to practice and play almost every day," he explained. "And we had come up with a whole bunch of new songs that were going to be on the next album. If Jim liked them. So, Elektra Records, Jack Holzman (label's founder and CEO), he was really cool about the whole thing. And he says, 'Why don't you guys put out another record? Everybody's gonna miss Jim, and everything." "But in our contract, we had two more albums to go. So he says, 'Yeah, let's do them, let's keep it going.' We did have reservations," Krieger replied. "I mean, it's like The Stones are going on without Mick Jagger or something like that. And maybe it was a stupid idea. I don't know. But I really love some of those songs that are on those albums," Robby Krieger said (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar). The Doors continued to be one of the most influential American bands of all time. Kriueger and Manzarek performed many times over the decades with other singers, more notably with The Cult's vocalist Ian Astbury, touring as The Doors of the 21st Century. The two surviving members of the group nowadays are Robby Krieger and John Densmore. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6mTr6KvqQs&t=194sThe post Robby Krieger explains why The Doors continued after Morrison’s death appeared first on Rock and Roll Garage.
