INXS was born in Sydney in August 1977 as The Farriss Brothers: brothers Andrew, Tim, and Jon Farriss joined forces with Garry Gary Beers, Michael Hutchence, and Kirk Pengilly. They debuted at Whale Beach, establishing a close-knit group fueled by school friendships and shared musical ambition. Their renaming to INXS (a play on “in excess” and inspired by IXL jam and the English band XTC) marked the start of a transformative era in Australian rock. Their self-titled debut album arrived in October 1980, produced in the relentless hours between midnight and dawn.
