Dweezil Zappa recalls first encounter with Eddie Van Halen
Frank Zappa's son and guitarist Dweezil Zappa had the chance to meet Eddie Van Halen back in the early 80s when the musician went to his father's house.
He was only 12 and was a huge fan of the Hard Rock band. Zappa recalled in an interview with Andertons Muisc Co. his first encounter with Eddie.

"One time, we got a phone call to the house from a guy purporting to be Edward Van Halen. We had no way of knowing, because it could have been anybody. I didn't know what he sounded like, I'd never heard him talk in an interview, because there was no way to do that unless you heard a radio interview, which would be few and far between. And you only knew people from photographs or the album covers."
"So my mom said, 'There's a guy that says he's Eddie Van Halen.' I'm like, 'Say what now?' And I get on the phone, because at that time, you could have a phone in each room, and anyone could pick up the line and listen from another room. And so I was listening to this guy talking, and the only reference I had in my mind was, there was that part in 'Unchained' where somebody says, 'Come on, Dave, give me a break.'"
He continued:
"And I was like, 'I don't know if that's Edward, or if that could be their producer, Ted Templeman.' Which turns out it's Ted Templeman. But I'm like, 'This has got to be Edward,' because the 12-year-old who's obsessed with Van Halen wants it to be. Turns out it was. And he does show up. He comes over to the house because he lived very close by, maybe within like 15 minutes or less."
"But when he got there, he was wearing the Van Halen jumpsuit from 'Women and Children First', the Van Halen necklace, and he brought a guitar, not in a case, just holding it, and he's coming up the stairs. And I've told this story a lot of times, but to me, really, it was like seeing a superhero in real life. I mean, the way I saw it, it was, like, backlit with a smoke machine," Dweezil Zappa said (Transcribed by Ultimate Guitar).
He was a friend of Frank and the friendship continued with his son Dweezil Zappa. Eddie Van Halen passed away back in 2020 at the age 65 after years battling cancer. Frank had passed away in 1993 at the age of 52, also a victim of cancer.
