Seven-year-old genital mutilated in mosque – parents to justice

Domestic. A seven-year-old girl was taken by ambulance to hospital in Södermanland with heavy bleeding from the genital area. The parents claimed that she had been involved in a bicycle accident – but after secret interception and bugging in the family’s residence, the prosecutor has now prosecuted for particularly serious assault. It turned out that the girl was genital mutilated inside a mosque.
The incident happened in July three years ago. The girl was described bleed “severely from the lower abdomen” and the parents and relatives stated that she had been injured in a bicycle accident.
At the hospital, however, the health care workers reacted to the fact that the story did not respond to the injuries.
“Health care found that the girl had three wounds inside the vagina. They also noted that the girl lacked other injuries to the body and in the lower abdomen, which they considered was inconsistent with the bicycle accident that those who came in with the girl to the hospital had caused the bleeding, prosecutor Martina Valentin told TV4 News.
Police launched a preliminary investigation into genital mutilation. However, the case was closed down, like the other 308 suspicions of genital mutilation that has been received over a six-year period. According to the prosecutor, enough was lacking to lead the investigation forward.
In 2024, new data was received by the police and the investigation resumed. Police took to more far-reaching methods: phone tapping of the parents and hidden microphones in their apartment.
In the recorded conversations, the mother allegedly told one of the children “not to tell anything,” and the parents allegedly “talked to a witness about what to say to the police” and talked together before interrogation. According to the prosecutor, the mother finally admitted openly that it was not a bicycle accident, but that the girl had been cut in the genital area.
According to the prosecutor, the investigation shows that the girl was genitally mutilated inside a mosque in Södermanland. Parents were arrested and have been detained since January this year. During the investigation, other suspicions of abuse and child peace violations have also emerged.
The act is classified as particularly gross mistreatment. According to the indictment, the seven-year-old girl allegedly “dangered” and suffered a “severe bodily injury”.
The indictment is the sixth concerning genital mutilation since the law was introduced in 1982. In four of the five previous cases, the courts have sentenced to liability.
The trial is now underway against both parents and another relative who is suspected of being involved. All suspects are denying crimes.
