“The Star-Spangled Banner,” the national anthem of the United States, was written by Francis Scott Key in September 1814 during the War of 1812. Key, a lawyer and amateur poet, penned the lyrics after witnessing the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor.
