If migrants in Belarus have grounds for asylum, they can seek asylum there. This is stated by the Foreign Minister on Monday. At the same time, Iraq is preparing for the evacuation of its citizens.
On Monday, the migrants made new attempts to cross the border into Poland, but are still being held back by Polish police and military. Poland has declared a state of emergency at the border, sending about 15,000 troops there.
Starting on Thursday, Iraqi authorities will begin the evacuation of Iraqi citizens who want to return voluntarily. However, many have no plans to give up the ambition to go to Germany and Sweden, among other places.
- We will not return to Iraq, we are 100 percent, 200 percent safe. We stay here. We either die or they open the border, a migrant told RIA Novosti on Wednesday.
No EU asylum
As a consequence of the recent trips along the border, EU foreign ministers are expected to give the green light to new sanctions against Belarus on Monday. The EU now focuses mainly on how to stop the influx to the border, but also on what to do with the thousands of migrants who are already there. However, no asylum in an EU country is to be considered, according to the Swedish Foreign Minister.
- They must receive humanitarian support on the spot, then they must be helped back to their countries if they have no grounds for asylum - then they can seek asylum in Belarus, says Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S) to state radio .
In Belarus, President and dictator Alexander Lukashenko says that if the EU does not open a so-called humanitarian corridor, he will fly the migrants directly to Germany.
