1 Thessalonians 4:11:
and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life and attend to your own business and work with your hands, just as we commanded you,
1 Peter 3:4
but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
Which serves the Lord better? The person who runs around making a lot of noise about their faith, or the person who lives quietly, successfully, decently, and then asked how they manage it profess it as a result of their faith?
The first person, who are often referred to as the "Bible Thumpers", can't go through a day without making as many people aware they ARE a good Christian as they can, and can't have a conversation without inserting as many "hallelujah"'s and "Praise God"'s as they can muster. They have to insist on "praying over" people who at one look you can see they are uncomfortable with it. They'll invite you to Church with them and jump up and down and be the loudest ones in the sanctuary. GREAT JOB! How many people did they have think they were a nutjob in that day? Wonder how many people THAT drew to Christ? Wonder how many it pushed further away.
Then there's the person as described in the scripture above... the quiet guy down the street who often says hello with a smile. Every once in a while he'll run into someone he knows and have a conversation with them. Tell them about his work, his family, and just general things of every day life. Seldom misses a day of work, and never complains about the hardships of life, and always seems content in his ways. When it comes up about how he manages to have that peace, he won't shy away. He'll say plain and straight, I owe all I have to my Lord!
He'll invite a friend to Church, all the other "good" Christians turn and look at him, thinking (as they often gossip with others) "He never says anything! He doesn't even sing at worship! I've never even heard him say Hallelujah or Praise god! Thank God I'm saved and not like him!" What they don't realize is the friend he brought to Church with him was led to the Lord that day, and was led there by the example set by the one they mock. I don't think I'd want to be them in the eyes of the Lord.
Ya wanna know the kicker? That quiet servant of the Lord has NO IDEA if anyone else is saved, or if he is even saved himself... but he prays vigorously that he will be... and that those who proclaim their salvation by deeds may one day be, too.
