On Monday, the left-wing newspaper Dagens ETC fired its lead writer Kajsa Ekman Makboul, also known as Kajsa "Ekis" Ekman. The background is that Ekman Makboul this weekend wrote an editorial in which she criticizes the Kyiv Independent for the newspaper's ties to Nazism.

Kyiv Independent is a Ukrainian English-language newspaper founded in December last year by journalists who skipped the Kyiv Post. Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the number of readers of the newspaper has increased dramatically. Many media in the Western world rely almost exclusively on the newspaper's reporting to follow the war in Ukraine.

Close ties to Nazism
But Kajsa Ekman Makboul's article points to close ties between Kyiv Independent's war correspondent Illia Ponomarenko and the Azov Battalion. Ponomarenko has repeatedly praised the neo-Nazi battalion from his Twitter account. The newspaper's CEO Daryna Shevchenko is also accused of having ties to Nazism.

Ekman Makboul wonders if a Swedish newspaper, where employees expressed such sympathies, had been treated in the same way as the Kyiv Independent. She also notes that Azov and Aidar, another battalion of neo-Nazi links, are not just about opinions but have also committed war crimes.

At the same time, Ekman Makboul criticizes the fact that, among others, the Swedish media organization Utgivarna and Bonnier have donated money to the Ukrainian newspaper.

Criticized by DN
The fact that the Kyiv Independent and Bonnier's financing of it has been criticized has aroused bad blood - not least at Bonnier-owned DN.

"Why is it so important to question and suspect Ukraine? I simply do not understand it ", asks DN's lead writer Erik Helmersson in his own editorial which will be published on Monday.

Gets fired
On Monday, Dagens ETC chooses to end its collaboration with Kajsa Ekman Makboul after almost ten years.

Today's ETC's editor-in-chief Andreas Gustavsson writes about the collaboration that "it is no longer possible", despite the fact that he himself approved and published Ekman Makboul's editorial.

He continues that “2022 is not 2014. The policy is different. Journalism is different. Today's ETC is different "and that the magazine's" future and reputation and credibility weigh so much more heavily on me than an idealistic model for the leadership side that has been dated. "

Salary: 9000 a month
In a post on Facebook , Kajsa Ekman Makboul is strongly critical of how she is treated by her client.

"How can one have intellectuals if they are to live in fear of being fired? How can one have journalism in times of war if they are not allowed to dig and present what they have found, in order to risk benefiting one side or the other? ” she asks herself.

She also takes the opportunity to draw attention to poor working conditions for those who work for Dagens ETC.

“In the first years, we did not even get a holiday, and holiday pay then had to be fought for. As a freelancer, you have no contract, you work from home, you pay the costs yourself, salary 9000 / month before tax. Wonder how much they earned on one? ” writes Kajsa Ekman Makboul.
