Zelensky has arrested his opposition leader

FOREIGN. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has now had the leader of the country's largest opposition party arrested.

Volodymyr Zelenskyj has posted on his official Telegram channel a degrading picture that shows how Viktor Medvedchuk, chairman of Ukraine's second largest party For Life and the president's main political rival, is sitting in a chair with handcuffs.

"A special operation was carried out by the [security service] SBU. Well done! Details will come later," the Ukrainian president wrote.

"Slava Ukraini!" he continues.


The Opposition Platform - For Life was one of eleven opposition parties that Volodymyr Zelensky decided to ban in March after accusing them of having ties to Russia.

Opposition leader Viktor Medvedtjuk has been placed under house arrest accused of treason, but managed to escape on 28 February. But now he is again Zelenskyj's prisoner.

Another opponent of Volodymyr Zelensky, his US-friendly predecessor to the presidency, Petro Poroshenko, is being investigated for alleged treason.
