Muslim clothing demands on asylum accommodation "a misunderstanding"

Samnytt recently reported on how the management of an asylum accommodation issued a restraining order to Ukrainian refugee women not to dress in a way that "can provoke men from foreign cultures" in the accommodation. After massive criticism, the chairman of the municipal board rushes out to limit damage - it is a matter of "a misunderstanding", she claims.

It was on Wednesday that information came that the Ukrainian refugee women at the Galaxen asylum accommodation in Olofström had received orders from the management not to dress in shorts and short-sleeved food. This is because there are asylum seekers "men from other cultures" at the accommodation who "can be provoked".

The information has received a lot of attention, but Galaxen's management has made itself inaccessible to the media and refused to answer questions about how they reasoned and how they think the decision rhymes with an equal value base.

Instead, the municipal board's vice chairman, Annika Sjöstedt (S), is now rushing out to pour oil on the waves of criticism. She claims in a comment to the media that everything is a misunderstanding.

According to Sjöstedt, the only ban issued on Galaxen's asylum accommodation should not be to go directly from the lake and into the dining room in a bikini. Whether burkini is allowed is not clear.

Annika Sjöstedt says, in contrast to the media, that she got in touch with the management of the asylum accommodation and was told that this is the only dress code that has been issued.

This is not how the Ukrainian women perceived the situation, but since the Swedish Migration Board has asked the municipal management not to "get involved", Sjöstedt does not currently intend to obtain the women's version. In principle, however, she puts her foot down on what should apply.

Ongoing discussion about norms and values
That Swedish standards should apply in Sweden is not really as obvious as the municipal board's vice chairman in Olofström claims.

How far, if at all, Swedish society should make concessions to Islam and other cultural and religious values ​​foreign to our country has long been a prominent issue in the public debate.

It gained renewed relevance after the Koran riots this Easter, where Muslim and gang-criminal immigrants in six cities injured hundreds of police and stole and burned a large number of police vehicles in anger over a copy of the Koran being set on fire. In the past, it has been a question of whether one should be allowed to show satirical drawings of the Prophet of Islam.

Another area that has been discussed repeatedly is the immigrant deviant clothing culture with a veil, full-coverage clothing and also full-coverage swimwear. In which contexts shall such garments be permitted where it requires special rights from rules and norms accepted in Sweden.

Conversely, the discussion has been about what demands from Muslims should have the right to make on how Swedes dress in different contexts. Above all, young women have been subjected to harassment when, according to Swedish customs, they dress in hot weather, but in a way that according to immigrant cultural norms is considered loose and legitimizes sexual abuse.

This latter type of cultural clash has in recent months become more common in the country's asylum accommodation, where the western migrants with their mostly Muslim values ​​have previously completely dominated but are now mixed with Ukrainian refugee women who have a more Western style of dress.

The question now is which culture should have priority and the duty to give way and whether, as with the burning of the Koran, it is more important not to create social unrest than to maintain accepted Western norms, laws and rules when there is reason to believe that it can lead to violent reactions .
