MEDIA. Participants in a study say that they experience that the media are not independent when they report, but rather that they run their own agenda. This is alarming, according to researchers, reports Journalisten.

The new report from Media & Democracy at Lindholmen Science Park provides insight into how rare users of news media in the age group 20–40 years reason about news and social journalism.

The report is based on an in-depth study in which 24 interviewees were asked to answer questions about their own use of news and why they choose or opt out of certain topics and media.

Several of the interviewees believe that the media pursue their own agendas, which they select and angle the news from the outside.

"Yes, but then they [journalists / media] always have… always a certain opinion that they want to spread through what they write. Even if it should be as if objective, their opinion still comes in somehow. Because, I think that a newspaper has […] a certain opinion, which they sort of spread, that 'this is how we think is good', and then they show it with what is bad news and what is good news, for example ", reads a comment.

One of the interviewees says:

"So, I almost think they have a mission as well, that this is the newspaper's opinion."

"Especially online, you notice that some newspapers hold on to a certain line and only cover certain news," says another.

This is alarming, according to the report's author Ulrika Andersson, associate professor of journalism at the University of Gothenburg.

"Given that independence and neutrality are normative ideals for news journalism, it is worrying to say the least that so many of the respondents feel that the media has a hidden agenda, where their goal is to bring out perspectives and images of society that align with the newspaper's own line." , states Ulrika Andersson according to Journalisten.
