Greece builds wall against "illegal Afghans"
Published August 23, 2021 at 7:17 p.m.
FOREIGN. Greece is now further tightening its border with Turkey, after a wave of Afghans is expected to try to "escape" to the welfare states of Europe.
According to Greece, immigrants can stay in one of the safe Muslim countries they cross on the 400 km long road to the EU border, instead of trying to enter the high-income countries in the northern EU.
"Our country should not become a road into the EU for illegal Afghan migrants," said Greek Migration Minister Notis Mitarachi.
The boundary fence is extended with 40 kilometers of steel and the concrete fence, which is five meters high and must have barbed wire at the top. The area around the border will then be monitored with thermal cameras and drones.
The border between Greece and Turkey is about 208 kilometers long
