The parliament in New Zealand has recently voted for a strong liberalization of the country's abortion legislation. A number of startling changes are being introduced. Among other things, pregnant women can now choose to have an abortion at any time during pregnancy. They can also be "harvested" for organ donation or research.
Opinion polls show that only two percent of New Zealand women are positive about the new abortion law and a whopping 94 percent would have preferred to keep previous legislation, Bothlivesmatter reports . Despite this, Prime Minister Jacinda Adern was one of the 68 who voted for the changes to the law. 51 members voted against.
The new law means, among other things, that abortion will be possible until birth, regardless of the reason. This also allows so-called "sex-selective abortions", which means that you as a parent can regret it if it turns out that the child does not have the gender you would prefer.

Doctors do not need to be present for abortions
No doctor needs to be present at the abortion anymore. If a child happens to survive a "failed abortion", no medical help is needed, but the child can instead be euthanized or simply left to die of its own accord. Children who are aborted between week 20 and birth do not need to be given pain relief during the abortion, writes the Norwegian Document .
There will also be no legal restrictions on "controversial abortion methods", such as partial-birth abortions (which involve sucking out the baby's brain during birth) or abortions performed by aborting the fetus/child by cutting it up in the womb.
The number of "late-term abortions", defined as an abortion carried out on a child between 20 weeks of pregnancy and birth, increased by 43 per cent between 2019 and 2020, according to an official information request by Right To Life New Zealand to the New Zealand Department of Health . One of these abortions was performed on a child who was between 35 and 39 weeks' gestation. A pregnancy is generally considered full at 37 weeks.
