Säpo wants a change in the law that will allow them to collect information about people in social media. This despite the fact that the persons are not suspected of any crime. The government has given the go-ahead to implement such a change in the law.

The Swedish Security Police, Säpo, has sent a request to the Ministry of Justice for increased powers to process personal data.

Säpo wants the rules regarding which personal data the authority is allowed to collect to be relaxed so that they can collect such data online about Swedes who are not suspected of crime.

"Severe restriction"
The legislation that currently applies means that the information Säpo collects must have a clear connection to the agency's work against, among other things, terrorism and espionage. But Säpo believes this is a "serious limitation".

According to Säpo, an example of a limitation is that when they want to review a thread on an internet forum, they must make sure that there is no sensitive personal data in the material.

The authority writes that the amounts of data on the internet are so large that they cannot be handled manually, and that they therefore want to develop an AI service that can sort all the information.

The authority believes that an AI tool would go through the data instead of Säpo's own employees is proof that it "does not automatically mean an increased intrusion into personal integrity".

Morgan Johansson supports the demand
Justice Minister Morgan Johansson (S) has said during a press conference earlier this week that Säpo's demands are reasonable - and that it is important that the state gets better at "mapping extremists in social media".

- I have given my officials the task of starting such a review to respond to Säpo's home address. I think that's an important thing to increase the detection opportunities for these individuals, he said at the time.

At the same time, the government and the party Johansson represents have been criticized for applying a broad and arbitrary definition of what extremism is, where political opponents are often included.
