The Social Democrats' group leader in the church meeting, Jesper Eneroth, wants priests who deny marriage to same-sex couples to be considered discriminatory and thus be able to be de-collared.
- I think that the order of the church must be superior to the opinion of individual office holders, he says to Kyrkans tidning .
Jesper Eneroth, member of S and group leader of the nomination group in the church meeting, wants the judicial chapter to be mandated to declare a priest ineligible to perform the church's ordination service if the priest discriminates against someone on the basis of gender, age, ethnicity or sexual orientation. He writes this in a motion to the church meeting, where he also writes that it should be considered discriminatory to refrain from marrying a same-sex couple "solely on the grounds that the couple is of the same sex".

Eneroth believes that the Church of Sweden as a whole does not legally discriminate against same-sex couples, but that "individual priests who refuse to marry same-sex couples are acting discriminatory, if not in a legal sense then from a diaconal perspective".

- I think that the order of the church must be superior to the opinion of individual office holders. As a member of the Church of Sweden, you should be able to have different opinions, but as a priest in the Church of Sweden, you have a responsibility to stand up for the church's order, and not make a distinction between gender at weddings, he says to the Church newspaper.

"All priests must follow it"
The church meeting decided in 2009 that weddings of same-sex couples would be included in the Church of Sweden's marriage regulations. Jesper Eneroth says that what was said then that the church would in future accommodate two views of marriage is now overplayed. To the newspaper's question whether the change he wants to see could not lead to a betrayal debate, he answers:

- I joined the church meeting in 2013 and wasn't there in 2009. The decision was to change the order of marriage, and make no distinction between gender. My motion is that all priests should follow it.

Another 84 exercises
In addition to the motion that priests who refuse to marry same-sex couples should be able to have their collars removed, another 84 motions had come in from the members of the church meeting when the motion time for the autumn meeting expired on August 4.

- As usual, there are several motions that connect to various events that have been current in the past year, everything from the archbishop election to the war in Ukraine. It is also noticeable among the motions that the nomination groups want to pursue the issues they raised in connection with last year's church election, says Emma Hansen Dahlqvist, manager of the church meeting, in a press release.

Among other things, the petitioners propose that the church meeting should express its support for the Orthodox Church in Ukraine, that the Church of Sweden should introduce a national whistleblower function and that the church meeting should distance itself from conversion therapy for LGBTQI people.

Facts: The church meeting
The Church Assembly is the Church of Sweden's highest decision-making body at national level and consists of 251 members.
The church meeting meets in Uppsala during two sessions: 4-7 October and 21-23 November.
When the time for motions before the church meeting expired on August 4, 85 motions had come from members. During the first session of the church meeting, members and bishops meet for committee work. During the second session of the church meeting, the proposals are debated before a decision is finally made.
