The citizens' initiative would like ordinary citizens to be able to carry a handgun for self-defense.
A group of security professionals have made a citizens' initiative, according to which protection should be made one of the criteria for granting a gun license, so that ordinary citizens could carry a handgun for self-defense. Yle was the first to report on the matter.
In the opinion of the initiators, society is unable to protect individual citizens in Finland who are in need of special protection.
- If, for example, the insecurity prevailing in some areas in Sweden in public places becomes more common in Finland as well, it may be well justified to protect one's personal integrity, and people living in troubled areas may not be able to move to safer areas for financial reasons, for example, the initiative says.
In the initiative's opinion, granting a firearms permit to persons who already carry firearms in their work duties would increase "general order and safety, for example in emergency situations or when the threat of terrorism rises".
Helsinki Police Chief Commissioner Jari Taponen called the proposal "absurd" on Twitter.
- It mainly raises the question of how to define professionalism in the security industry? Taponen tweeted.
