FOREIGN. The Swiss People's Party, SVP, plans to initiate a referendum on putting a cap on immigration to the country.
If Switzerland gets over 10 million inhabitants, the country should be able to renegotiate or terminate international treaties relating to immigration, according to the SVP's idea.
The party will decide on the plan at a party congress in early January, writes Le Temps.
At the urging of SVP leader Thomas Matter, the party is already working on a draft proposal for a referendum.
Limiting immigration in this way is about "ecological sustainability", according to SVP.
Switzerland was estimated in 2020 to have 8.6 million inhabitants
