She had flown from Nepal to the United Arab Emirates with the promise of a visa and a job. Instead, she was raped and held as a sex slave. Last weekend, the young woman was rescued by Jonatan Alfvén and the Swedish association "Love and hope".
- The slave trade is big in these parts of the Middle East, says Jonatan Alfvén to Samnytt.
It is late last Friday evening that a 20-year-old woman is put on a plane from Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates home to Nepal. And with that, a number of dramatic weeks are over, which began with the woman flying to the Arab world - lured by promises of a paid plane ticket, visa and job.
Rescued by Swedish aid organization
However, the stay in the Arab country does not turn out to be what the woman imagined. She is stripped of her passport and phone and driven to a house in Al Sila, on the border with Saudi Arabia, where about fifteen other young women are also. The women are placed in different households where they are subjected to sexual harassment and rape.
The 20-year-old woman is saved by "Love and hope" - a Swedish aid organization that works against child sex trafficking in particular. The organization involves various authorities and puts pressure on the man the woman lives with to let her go. Jonatan Alfvén from Love and hope tells Samnytt that the woman's fate is part of a pattern:
- It is rich people who buy young women from poor countries. The slave trade is big in these parts of the Middle East, he writes in an email.
Love and hope writes on Facebook that the young woman previously lived in their orphanage in Nepal, which makes the incident "extra emotional".
Back home
Alfvén says that many of the women who are tricked into the Arab world come from Nepal and India, the two countries where his own organization operates, as well as Myanmar and Indonesia.
- These are two countries that "agents" and pimps have a good grasp of, he points out.
On Saturday morning, the vulnerable woman lands in her home country after a number of traumatic weeks. An Indian aid organization, Maiti India, is now working to get the man who conned the woman convicted.
- We are very grateful for the successful rescue operation and that the young woman was allowed to return to her home country, says Jonatan Alfvén to Samnytt.
