Published 4/17/2023
A 13-year-old Danish girl disappeared over the weekend in the countryside barely ten miles west of Copenhagen. After an intensive police hunt, she was found alive the following day, and now a 32-year-old Danish man has been arrested for kidnapping and raping the girl.
It is during the morning of Saturday that 13-year-old Filippa sets out on her bicycle to distribute newspapers in and around the small village of Kirkerup on Zealand. The parish, a typical Danish rural idyll less than ten miles from Copenhagen, has only a few hundred inhabitants.
At half past twelve, Filippa calls her mother and tells her that she has finished the tour and is on her way home. But Filippa never comes home, the parents go out to look and find her bike and bag along the road near home. The police are alerted and Missing people are called in. In a short time, the whole of Denmark becomes involved in the case of the girl who disappeared in broad daylight.

Filippa found alive
Police officers, about twenty dogs and a large number of people participate in the search for the missing girl. On Sunday, the police blocked off a property south of Kirkerup. At three in the afternoon, a press conference is called, and the police announce that the disappearance is being investigated as a crime. Many, including the girl's mother, fear the worst.
- Just a few minutes ago we informed Filippa's parents that we found her alive. We have arrested a 32-year-old man, Police Superintendent Kim Kliver begins the press conference, which surprises most people.
"The 27-hour nightmare is over and my beloved Filippa is home," comments the mother on Facebook.
Danish man detained
On Monday, the 32-year-old, Philip Westh, was arrested on probable cause on suspicion of having deprived Filippa of her liberty and raped her, or subjected her to other sexual abuse. According to the arrest warrant, the assaults were carried out with violence or the threat of violence. The defense lawyer states that the detainee made certain confessions. What he admitted, however, is classified.
The police announce that two more people who were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the abduction of Filippa have been released. "There is nothing in the police investigation that indicates that they have anything to do with Filippa's disappearance," the police write on Facebook.
