Man Pronounced Dead After Lightning Strike Says “Nobody Dies”

Dannion Brinkley (Credit: Youtube)In rare cases, individuals can be declared medically dead only to miraculously revive later—and one man who endured this after being struck by lightning has shared precisely what he witnessed. Scientists have developed simulations to depict the sensations one might feel just before death, while brain studies suggest that, in a very literal sense, your life may flash before your eyes as the mind continues to function even after death. Of course, nothing compares to the real experience—though, understandably, most cannot recount it, as returning from the dead is impossible. Yet one man defied the odds in what can only be called a miracle, surviving an incident in 1975 that left him medically dead after a lightning strike. As reported by the New York Post, Dannion Brinkley endured a terrifying ordeal when lightning struck him in what can only be described as a freak accident: “It went into the side of my head above my ear, it went down my spine,” Brinkley explained. “It threw me up in the air, I see the ceiling, it slams me back down, a ball of fire comes through the room and blinds me. I am burning. I am on fire. I am paralyzed.” Certainly a harrowing experience—so much so that doctors at the scene pronounced him dead and transported him to a nearby hospital morgue. It was there that Brinkley “returned” from death, reviving roughly 30 minutes after the lightning strike. He described the time when he was technically deceased as being filled with light and vivid flashbacks of his life. “Nobody dies. It never happens,” Brinkley asserts regarding the afterlife. “It’s not a part of the nature of reality, it’s not.” Since his extraordinary near-death encounter, Brinkley has dedicated himself to teaching spirituality and religion, claiming that his Christian faith allowed him to glimpse the afterlife while avoiding its darker aspects. “So, when you learn you don’t die, when you learn you’re a spiritual being, you’re not going to go to hell,” Brinkley argues, advocating for religious inspiration. “That’s enough to inspire you to change.” Dr. Sam Parnia, associate professor of medicine at NYU Langone Health, explains that this aligns with scientific understanding of post-death brain activity: “We were not only able to show the markers of lucid consciousness—we were also able to show that these experiences are unique and universal,” Dr. Parnia illustrates. “They’re different from dreams, illusions, and delusions.” This phenomenon may, in a way, define what the “afterlife” truly is—a series of intense life flashes that feel far more real than mere brain-generated visions.
