Abilene Christian University has apologized for and deleted a post poking fun at its rival after a football win.
“Many of you saw a post after ACU’s football win over Tarleton State. The post was not only unprofessional, it was inconsistent with the values of ACU,” the private university posted on X on Nov. 2.
“The content has been removed because it fell short of our standards, and we apologize to anyone who nay have been hurt or offended. Our standards are higher than what was conveyed in that post and we will ensure you experience that moving forward.”
The controversial graphic read “Tarleton is not a state,” with the score below it and the “T” in Tarleton flipped upside down, reported the Houston Chronicle, noting it “was a humorous, playful jab at their in-state rival.”
“…Social media accounts managed by teams or universities often troll opponents after a victory, especially when it involves beating a rival. One comment mentioned that Duke Athletics’ official account posted a graphic showing Clemson’s stadium being turned into a Spirit Halloween store following their win, giving the Wildcats some freedom to taunt as they wish,” the Chronicle reported.
The post announcing the decision to delete the playful jab has been viewed 2.8 million times as of Nov. 3 and prompted mocking and confusion among many observers.
“As a bit of an expert on excessively taunting opponents on social media after a win NEVER apologize I actually demand you repost the deleted graphic, with bigger font this time,” one response quipped.
Stated another: “Having expected to lose on the field, and surprised that their team pulled an upset, ACU administration took immediate action to ensure that the school took a humiliating loss anyways by posting this [apology].”
