And So It Begins: Big Resignation in NYC Just Hours After Mamdani's Win

New York City's Fire Commissioner resigns shortly after Mamdani's mayoral victory.

Following democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani’s win in the NYC mayoral election Tuesday night, expect a lot more stories like this: New York City's Jewish fire commissioner Robert Tucker just resigned. The timing, coming mere hours after Mamdani’s victory, could hardly be more telling.

He’ll be out of there by next month, before Zohran can even take the oath of office:

New York City Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker will leave his post next month, announcing his resignation the day after Zohran Mamdani was elected to be the city's next mayor.

In a statement, Tucker said he will remain on the job until Dec. 19, allowing the department to have "an orderly transition." Mamdani is set to be sworn in on Jan. 1, 2026.

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the 35th New York City Fire Commissioner," Tucker said. "Thank you to Mayor Adams for his trust and confidence in doing this job. We empowered the brave men and women who keep our city safe, bringing fire-related deaths to a historic low."

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams, who gave up his own reelection campaign and endorsed former Empire State Gov. Andrew Cuomo, gave major praise to Tucker:

"Commissioner Robert Tucker has led the Fire Department of the City of New York with courage, passion, and a sincere dedication to public safety," Adams said. "When I appointed Commissioner Tucker to this critical role, I knew he’d have the experience, grit, and zeal to protect our city and support our fearless heroes – the firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics who put their lives on the line for New York every day."

Our sister site Townhall had more:

Tucker is a Jewish philanthropist and businessman with no firefighting experience, who previously led the private security firm T&M before joining Mayor Eric Adams’ administration. A source told the New York Post that he plans to return to that role.

His resignation as FDNY commissioner came on the same day he was scheduled to fly to Israel to meet with a fire commissioner there.

While Tucker's reason for his resignation is unclear, many suspect that it has to do with the mayoral elect's stance on Israel, and sympathy towards Hamas, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization.

Reports are that perhaps as many as a million New Yorkers may jump ship and move elsewhere rather than live under a Marxist mayor. We don’t know Chief Tucker’s exact reasoning at this time, but I expect it will be the first of many such departures and resignations.

The people of New York City voted for this. Now we wait and see just how bad it’s going to get.
