Two men, Christopher Svochak and Richard Penskoski are charged with felonies after taunting a group of Muslims with bacon while praying in a parking lot at the USF – University of Southern Florida. A third man, Ricardo Yepez, is still being sought. All three are also facing misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct and disrupting a school or lawful assembly.

Bacon is considered “haram” or illegal in Islam.

None of the men have ties to USF, and all are trespassed from ever returning to the campus. Each faces a number of years in prison.  While the First Amendment grants freedom of religion, it doesn’t say that we can be forced to submit to Islam. Is this some of that force? Being arrested for bacon? The main problem here is one of a little over-the-top planning.

Did this situation work against the Gospel? There are several schools of thought. These men overdid it. They are correct that Islam is a false religion and Mohammed was a pedophile. They are correct that Jesus is Lord.  And we should never allow Islam to force the rest of us to comply with their religion (aka political system).

By the same token, disrupting others during their “prayers” with a bunch of bacon was not the best plan. Taunting others creates anger rather than conversion. CAIR has been applauding the arrests, which these men should have known were coming. How did three men who were not connected to the university learn of the parking lot prayers? Was it posted on the school bulletin board or website?  There are some unanswered questions. But the fact is that these guys didn’t think this thing through.
