Long-Lost 'Jaws' Props Discovered
JAWS, 1975

What To Know

  • Propstore has discovered two previously unknown props from the original 1975 Jaws film: a W.W. Greener Harpoon Rifle Mark II with a special-effects shark dart, and a rod and reel used early in the movie.
  • These rare items will be auctioned in March 2026.
  • Fans can also view authentic Jaws memorabilia, including costume pieces and the only surviving full-scale model shark, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures’ “Jaws: The Exhibition” in Los Angeles through July 26, 2026.

As most Jaws fans know, new props from the 50-year-old blockbuster rarely resurface. The film’s severe shooting conditions damaged many of the screen-used props (including most of the animatronic sharks), while others were reused or discarded by crew members who had no idea that the film would become a classic. But Propstore, a California-based movie collectibles company, has announced that they have unearthed two previously-unknown Jaws props: a W.W. Greener Harpoon Rifle Mark II, with custom special-effects shark dart, and a rod and reel used early in the film, when the crew of the Orca is only beginning to grasp the size of the creature they’re dealing with. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the items will be auctioned off in March 2026.

In a statement, Propstore’s chief operating officer Brandon Alinger said, “Jaws is a challenging title for memorabilia collectors — it is one of the most successful and beloved blockbusters of all time, but very few fully-verified props or costumes have ever surfaced from the film. These two pieces are certainly some of the most significant ever offered at public auction, with the harpoon launcher bearing extra significance due to how extensively it is featured in the film and how much of a role it plays in the plot of the film.”

Fans interested in seeing Jaws props for a more affordable price can head to Los Angeles’ Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, where “Jaws: The Exhibition” will run through July 26, 2026. The exhibit features props including costume pieces, a shark dorsal fin, and the barrels used by the Orca crew to track the shark and attempt to tire it out. The Academy Museum is also home to the sole surviving full-scale model shark from the film; it looms over one of the museum’s escalators.
