Luxury Socialism in a Nutshell

A brief look at the performative nature of celebrity socialism through Tom Morello's guitar.

Stories like this one aren't important in one sense—knowing about this will not change your life even a little bit—but they are useful glimpses into the fabric of our times and the social milieu in which we live.

Tom Morello is, for those of you who don't know, a radical left-wing activist who made his fortune raging against capitalism, white people, opposition to alphabet ideology, and America.

He famously performs with a custom guitar he had made for himself and subsequently modified over the years. It is emblazoned with left-wing messages that call for violent revolution (Arm the Homeless!) and sports a communist flag.

What makes his story so special is that he has made a mint out of being a radical activist, with a reported net worth of $40 million (not Taylor Swift money, but not bad), and has now partnered with Fender to sell a replica of his "Arm the Homeless" guitar for the low, low price of $2500.

You, too, can become a faux communist for the right price.

Personally, I don't care about Morello, and as far as I know, I have never heard one of his songs, although Mitch Berg will likely correct me and inform me that it is now elevator music or something, but that is not the point. A$$hole musicians will be a$$holes, after all, and I have neither the time nor the inclination to rage against his machine.

But what this episode lays bare is how performative all this posturing is. Morello is cashing in, and has been forever. The same is true for Bruce Springsteen and almost all the cultural elite hypocrites. They screech about poverty, global warming, homelessness, and how white supremacy is on the march, and probably even mean it in most cases, but they have the emotional and intellectual depth of a sheet of graphene.

One atom deep.

For God's sake, the man went to Harvard. He published a newsletter in The New York Times. Anti-elite, he is not.

He'll even sell you video games.

I hope he got paid well. He has to pay for upkeep on his $5 million home. Being a performative communist is expensive.

Millions of people have apparently flocked to follow this faux communist because they, too, have principles about as deep as a sheet of graphene. No doubt they are impressed with his passion and his Harvard education.

Needless to say, I'm not. Morello is the perfect postmodern artist, having adopted a radical persona as well thought out as any AWFL's, perfectly performative, doing nothing but making life worse for everybody but himself.

If you like, you can buy his overpriced guitar here
