The US has formally ended aid to Somalia after 76 tons of food aid in a warehouse was demolished. In addition, 1,650 more tons of food are in jeopardy and will have to be stored in a separate facility.

Earlier this month, Somali authorities at the Mogadishu port demolished a key World Food Programme (WFP) warehouse-a facility built with international support to store emergency food aid. U.S. officials say the action, ordered by Somalia’s president and carried out without notifying donor nations, likely destroyed roughly 76 metric tons of U.S. food aid meant for vulnerable people. Additional shipments totaling over 1,600 metric tons were also affected and had to be relocated…

In response, Washington paused all current U.S. assistance programs that directly benefited the Somali federal government.

The State Department plans to end all aid to Somalia by May. The WFP warehouse had donations from several international countries, with the United States providing about 90% of the food. All of it was intended for ‘vulnerable’ people. Having to provide a new warehouse for the 1,650 tons sent is likely not cheap.

The ports minister issued an eviction notice to the WFP in December, but the Somali government had later said the warehouse could still be used while a final decision was pending. The port manager claimed that the food was moved to two containers and remained accessible, but WFP said that was not true, and that it is likely ruined because it requires specialized storage.

The food was donated by Americans under the Title II “Food for Peace” program and International Disaster Assistance, while the World Food Programme administers its distribution. Daily Wire

Somalia continues to be a thorn in the side of Americans, even when trying to help them. Stopping all aid to Somalia will likely throw people like Ilhan Omar into a raging fit, but keep in mind it’s their own government’s fault.
