Vermont independent Sen. Bernie Sanders likes to lecture others and is known for taking on a holier-than-thou tone while pushing his socialist agenda, but I’m very curious how he’s going to explain this one. You see, he’s been on the board of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum since 2007 — but reportedly has never managed to make it to a single meeting despite the museum being within walking distance from his office.

They meet biannually, yet in 18 years, he hasn’t shown up, according to the NY Post:
Sanders (I-Vt.) was appointed in 2007 to the Holocaust Memorial Council, which meets twice a year to oversee the landmark DC museum located about 2 miles from the Capitol.
Records supplied to The Post by museum staff show that Sanders, who mainstreamed democratic socialism with campaigns for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, has missed every meeting of the board since his appointment.
Another member of the board was less than impressed:
“There are two large meetings every year where people fly in from all over the country for it. But Bernie Sanders couldn’t be bothered to walk across the road in DC,” said fellow board member Robert Garson, president of the American Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists.
Now, a bipartisan group is working to get him booted.

It’s kind of hard to believe that after the Hamas slaughter of Oct. 7, 2023, the sustained antisemitic violent protests at a huge number of our universities, and the ongoing anti-Jewish attacks in our major cities, Bernie couldn’t be bothered to show up at an institution honoring the Jewish experience when he is a board member. (When you ponder board members who apparently don’t do anything, you can’t help but think of Hunter Biden. Evidently, you can now add Sanders to that list.)

It’s time for him to go, according to some presumably irate members who do actually show up:
The disclosure has prompted a bipartisan push by some council members to seek Sanders’ replacement, citing concerns over prolonged nonparticipation at a time of rising antisemitism and renewed scrutiny of Holocaust education. Several board members told the Post that regular attendance is essential to fulfilling the council’s responsibilities.
A letter signed by multiple council members was sent to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, requesting that Sanders be replaced by another Senate-appointed representative willing to engage actively in the council’s work.
Author and pundit Walter Kirn had an explanation for Sanders’ behavior:
Because he's an actor

According to their website, the Holocaust Memorial Council was created by Congress in 1980 and has 68 members, 55 appointed by the president, five by the Senate and House of Representatives, and three ex officio members from the Departments of Education, Interior, and State. Sanders, the site says, was appointed by the Senate.

Looks like they could do with one less member, since it’s apparently too much effort for Bernie to take a nice walk or grab an Uber to travel the less than two-mile distance from his office.
