Wonders Will Never Cease: Mainstream Outlet Fact Checks Trump's Murder Claim, and Realizes He's Right

CBS News fact-checks Trump's claim on murder rate decline, confirming it as true in a rare media acknowledgment.

Since Trump’s first term, the mainstream media has loved to fact-check the president and routinely claim things he says are false or misleading. I can barely recall a time when they just flat-out said, “Yeah, that’s true.”

But things have been changing over at CBS News, where editor-in-chief and founder of The Free Press Bari Weiss took over as editor-in-chief, and she has been demanding accountability and a move away from the obvious leftist bias they had become known for.

Incredibly, they flat-out rated Trump’s assertion at the State of the Union speech Tuesday night that the murder rate decline under his watch was the largest in history as “true”:

"This is the biggest decline, think of it in recorded history, the lowest number in over 125 years." A CBS News fact check has determined that is true.

I had to read that three times just to make sure I wasn’t imagining things.

Remember this, when ABC News anchor David Muir “fact-checked” Trump on live TV during a debate with Kamala Harris during the ’24 presidential election? Talk about putting your hand on the scale:

It's Not That Hard for Media to Cheat; How to Fight Back

My, how times are a changing.

Here’s Trump’s truth, and what CBS had to say about it:

True: Trump claims murder rate saw its largest decline in recorded history last year

"Last year, the murder rate saw its single largest decline in recorded history. This is the biggest decline, think of it, in recorded history — the lowest number in over 125 years."

Details

Preliminary data from independent researchers suggests that homicides may have hit a 125-year low last year, although the FBI's official annual crime report for 2025 will not be released until later this year.

A January study by the Council on Criminal Justice, or CCJ, found a "strong possibility" that the 2025 homicide rate will drop to about 4 per 100,000 residents, which would be the lowest recorded in law enforcement or public health data dating back to 1900. The homicide rate has been declining since 2022, according to annual FBI reports.

The CCJ report also noted that the reasons for last year's decline are not clear, but researchers say possible influences include "changes in criminal justice policies and programs, shifts in the use of technology, and broader social, economic, and cultural trends."

If they had mentioned Trump's illegal immigration deportation efforts and his focus on crime, I might have passed out in shock. Still, it's a step in the right direction.

David Muir hardest hit. Since I rag on the media regularly, I’ll give CBS News kudos for this one: they mostly played it straight. Now, if the other major media outlets stop being mouthpieces for the DNC, it will be a miracle indeed.
