“Because of what I knew—and what I had seen firsthand—I wanted Republicans to win the Senate majority in 2024.” 

Those are the words of former West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a long-time Democrat who switched to independent in ’24, in his new book set to be released Tuesday called "Dead Center: In Defense of Common Sense."

He accused Biden and Schumer of using bullying tactics to try to get him to sign on to pulling the country further and further left and assuring Democrat one-party rule:

He recalled that vote [on ending the filibuster] in his book and the pressure he felt from Schumer and Senate Democrats to fall in line on that and other key votes during Biden’s presidency.

Manchin accused Schumer of wanting a vote he "could broadcast to the radical left to prove his loyalty" and said the then-Senate majority leader didn’t actually believe that getting rid of the filibuster was the right thing to do, but rather to fulfill his "only priority" of maintaining control of the Senate…

"I believed it was the only hope for preserving the Senate as an institution. I truly believed that, if in power, Republicans would uphold the filibuster, the last guardrail preventing total partisan rule."

The West Virginian accused the Democrats of showing their true thirst for power in attempting to nuke the filibuster: they were simply hyper-partisan operators who cared more about bowing to the extremist left than they did about doing what was right for the country. “They had no interest in protecting the Senate’s role as the deliberative body,” he wrote, “They only cared about raw political power."

He added that former President Biden’s “I’m such a nice guy” act hid the fact that he is in fact a vicious partisan. The then-president got nasty when Manchin expressed concerns about the 2021 "American Rescue Plan" (profanity alert):

Biden ripped into Manchin for standing in the way of an early victory.

"As the drama began, I got a call from the president, and was he hot," Manchin wrote. "'If you kill this f— bill, I will never speak to you again,’ he promised. Anyone who knows Joe Biden —­ and I have known him for a very long time —­knows he’s got a very bad temper. He calls it his ‘Irish.’ I call it unfortunate. But if he was going there, so was I."

"'Your actions are reckless,' I spat back. ‘You’re sending a f—­ check to everyone. And if you missed anyone, it was only by mistake.’"

It’s not the first time the former senator has expressed disgust with his former party:

Now, if you ever wondered which president – Obama or Trump—talked more with the Democrat leader, you might be interested to know that it was 47 who actually listened to what he had to say. Manchin:

From the start, President Trump had an open line of communication with me. I spoke to him more in the first two years of his presidency than I did to President Obama during all eight years of his time in office.

It sounds like an absorbing read, and Manchin takes a tough line against his former comrades. It must be noted, however, that he did back down on one big fight—the budget-busting, $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan—and cast the decisive vote to pass the measure after earlier opposing it. He said he regrets the move. 

He also voted for the ridiculously titled 2022 "Inflation Reduction Act," really just a Green New Deal boondoggle, which was arguably an even costlier mistake for America. Those votes cannot be forgotten.

That being said, after this book, I think it’s safe to guess that Barack, Chuck, and Ole Joe won’t be sending Manchin any Christmas cards this year.
