Footage Shows Incredible Moment Inside The St. Louis Arch During Tornado
The last thing anyone wants to hear is that a tornado is in their area. When this does happen, the first thing you’ll want to do is head to a safe location. Your options, of course, will depend on where you live and what spaces you have access to. That said, the St. Louis arch is certainly not a location most of us would want to be in during any dangerous storm, much less one with a tornado.
But when this tornado made its way through St. Louis, a number of people were already inside the arch. Needless to say, many of these people were scared. Thankfully, however, it seems that all of them remained safe. There’s even footage from inside the arch as the winds picked up. You can watch this harrowing moment in the video below.

As this footage shows, the entire arch swayed dramatically as the tornadic winds blew. As terrifying as this was for the people inside, the fact that the arch was swaying is a sign that its design was working as intended. According to the Gateway Arch’s website, this 630-foot tall monument was made to withstand high wind speeds.

To make that possible, the arch was built to sway during particularly windy conditions. In fact, the St. Louis arch is able to sway up to 18 inches. For perspective, they say that 50-mile per hour winds only make the arch move 1.5 inches.
The tornado that blew through the city (as shown above from the arch) was an EF3, making the winds between 136 and 165 mph. In other words, the arch was made to withstand even these tornadic winds. Still, it’s safe to say most people would much prefer to be on the ground in a storm like this one.
