“Come With Us To See The Rare Synchronous Fireflies”
A single firefly alone holds so much beauty. I want you to imagine, then, how much more beauty there must be in a whole group of fireflies. Luckily, you don’t have to rely solely on your imagination. Toward the end of May and start of June, Elkmont within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is home to what are called synchronous fireflies.
These special creatures are known to synchronize their flashing lights. This magical show of lights is so amazing, the park had to limit who all can visit. To be one of these lucky people, you have to enter a lottery. There are eight viewing days to choose from each year. In 2025, it’s said that 40,000 people entered. A woman named Emily was one of only 900 accepted. Catch a glimpse at her group’s experience in the video below!

“I wish I could give every single firefly a little kiss on the forehead for being perfect,” someone sweetly admits in the comments, another person adding, “I am going to keep applying for this lottery. One day it will happen. So cool that you got to go!”

As frustrating as this lottery system might sound, it’s implemented for a very good reason. Viewing these synchronous fireflies became so popular, these special insects were being negatively effected. By lowering how many people can visit at once, the heightened risks that come with human visitors have lowered dramatically. Everyone wins!
If you do get the chance to witness these magical creatures, make sure to follow firefly viewing etiquette, as shared by the National Park Service. While lowering the number of visitors is vital, it’s still important for those of us who are chosen to be kind, considerate guests, too!
