Rather than emerging from the traditional music scene, Tenacious D was born from the theatrical world when actors Jack Black and Kyle Gass met at the Actors’ Gang theater troupe in Los Angeles in 1986. The comedy rock duo officially formed in 1994, taking their name from basketball commentator terminology—”tenacious defense”—which Black and Gass found amusing while watching Los Angeles Lakers games in Kyle’s apartment during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Since their formation, Tenacious D has released four studio albums, one live album, one extended play, and two video albums.
