True Sportsmanship: Kid Slows Down Mid-Race To Help Struggling Opponent Finish Strong
We sing the praises of heroes all the time. The firefighter who carried a child from a burning building, or the police officer who helped rescue a stranded motorist. Great things happen around us daily. We also tend to gloss over or miss the heroes on the middle school track. We don’t know this kid’s name, and it doesn’t matter. He is a hero for helping a classmate finish the race. Grab tissues.

The caption across the video says, “This kid of mine has the biggest heart!” Then, a quote from the son, “Jesus told me not to leave him, Mom. I couldn’t leave him.”
We don’t know if this was a race, a track meet, or a gym class event. The kids were running. The leaders took off, and one runner lagged badly. Another boy ran beside him, offering encouragement. The second boy altered his pace to match the slower boy.

When the slower boy stopped, the other boy stopped, too, urging his friend not to quit. Starting with some hesitant steps, then resumed running, determined to finish the race. As they ran, an adult woman joined them on the track. She offered him more encouragement, and the trio walked for a bit, trying a few jogging steps.
When they crossed the finish line of the race, the slow boy’s knees wobbled, but he made it. The second boy displayed extraordinary sportsmanship. The amount of compassion he has and the determined way he coaxed his friend to keep moving is incredible. His mom is proud of him. He should be proud of himself. He did a remarkable thing. Be proud of the slower boy because he kept going to finish the race.
